A boy and girl talking to each other.
Collette, what animals do you want to see today at the zoo?” asked Jimmy.  "I want to see the jaguars ," answered Collette.

Terry's Tips

Pictures give clues that help your child read. Connecting pictures and words is another way to help children read a story. Talking about how pictures show what the words are saying also helps children understand the different purposes of pictures and words.

Extension Activity:  As you read other books, have children look at the pictures first and guess what is happening before you read the words. After reading the words, have them look closely at the picture again and see how the words and picture connect. Also, have children look at the picture again to see if there are any extra details in the picture that were not mentioned in the text!
