Terry's Tips

On this page, encourage children to look at individual words. We want children to know words are made of letters and there are spaces between words.

Extension Activity:  Have children practice making words in other ways. Use plastic letters to make 2 or 3 words, or write 2 or 3 words on paper. Show children the spaces between words. Let them experiment with adding more letters to the words. Even though they may not create real words, they will learn that words can be many different sizes and lengths. It is the space before and after a word, not the number of letters it has, which separates it as a word.
