Help children find the first word on this page. Hold their finger to help them point. Practice this when reading other books, too.

Extension Activity: There are printed words and pictures everywhere in our world. Ask children to point to the first words on other pieces of writing as you go about your everyday routines so that they learn this is the order reading always takes place in. This order of reading is not just for reading books.

There are lots of words on this page. How do I know which word I should read first? Show me which word I should begin with.

When I am reading, I start by finding the word that is closest to the top of the page and is also furthest to the left. I see some hints on this page to help me: the first word we should read is in a different color.

I begin with the word that is in the top line, all the way on the left. Let's point to the word together! It is the word "When" and it is colored green. Let's click on the little black triangle to listen to the words said aloud, and point to each of the words as it is read.
