Maya Helps a Baby Seal

Baby seal swimming after a school of herring.

One day, a baby seal was swimming in the ocean. He was very hungry. He saw a school of herring . Herring was one of the baby seal's favorite fish to eat.

Terry's Tips

Some words can have more than one meaning. School is a good example of a word with more than one meaning. Ask children to tell what they know about school. Then use the coaches to help explain that school can also mean a group of fish. Help children practice using the word school in different ways.

Extension Activity: Together with your child, think of an animal and try to guess what its group might be called. Then look HERE together to find out!

Look at the picture for a hint. What is in front of the baby seal? Read the text again for a hint. What clues does the text give about what a herring is?

I read that herring are a type of fish. I looked at the picture and saw that a lot of little fish are swimming very closely together in the ocean in front of the baby seal. I think a herring is a fish that swims in the ocean, and a school of herring is a lot of little fish, called herring, swimming together in a group.
