Cat in a tree talking to a peacock.

“Look at me, look at me, I can climb up this tree,” said the cat .

Terry's Tips

Ask children to talk about the pictures in a story to make sure they know all the vocabulary words.  When they describe the picture, you can see whether they use words like peacock and climb. This helps you get a sense of what words they already know and what words may be new to them.

Extension Activity:

Ask children to describe pictures they see in other books and in their environment, help them to use words that may be new to them. Ask them to draw pictures of their new words and then write their description under the picture.
