One day, the animals held a fair. All the animals were excited to take part in different games.

Everyone drew a flag out of a bag to see what game they would play.

Terry's Tips

Develop self-assessment and reflection

In order to develop the capacity for self-regulation, students need to learn to monitor their emotions and reactivity carefully and accurately. Individuals differ considerably in their capacity for self-monitoring, and some students need a great deal of explicit instruction and modeling to learn to do this well.

On this page, a group decision is made by drawing flags with activity names out of a bag.  Drawing straws, or making group decisions by random choice, can be exciting for some but produce anxiety for others. Tell students about your experiences with drawing straws, and ask them to discuss a time when they were in a similar situation.
