Provide or Activate Background Knowledge:  Breaking the Frame

The shift in the point of view on this page--when the narrator talks directly to the characters-- is called "breaking the frame,"  a technique used to break the boundary between the reader and the action in the book.

Use students' relevant prior knowledge to anchor instruction and make academic learning relevant to their backgrounds and interests. Even if they don't know the term, students will be familiar with "breaking the frame" from video games and cartoons. Model your ideas and have them brainstorm times they, themselves, have seen or experienced something that "breaks the frame."
