Survival Story: Individual vs. Self

In the beginning of the movie, Katniss' sister is selected to participate in the annual Hunger Games. Katniss has an internal conflict with herself to decide whether or not she wants to save her sister and take her place in the deadly competition. After weighing the pros and cons of the situation with herself, Katniss decides that she will volunteer to save her sister and put herself in harms way.

This is an example of an individual vs. self conflict because Katniss had an internal struggle with a personal decision to make that would affect her life and was not being persuaded or forced to by anybody else.

Individual vs. self conflict: the character has a struggle within their own mind. Example: Katniss must decide within herself if she is capable of harming other competitors in order for her to survive.

Individual vs. environment: the character must overcome a force of nature in order to meet his goal. Example: Katniss must deal with the elements of nature, such as fire and floods, in order to survive when in the Hunger Games.

Individual vs. society conflict: the character disagrees with the people of their town or culture and may be turned on because of their own beliefs. Example: Katniss does not agree with the government's plans of hosting the annual Hunger Games event.
