“Don’t you fret too much over Mister Jem—” she began.

“Mis-ter Jem?”

“Yeah, he’s just about Mister Jem now.”

“He ain’t that old,” I said. “All he needs is somebody to beat him up, and I ain’t big enough.” (131)

In this section, Calpurnia says Jem is becoming a Mister, which is her way of saying he is becoming a man. I found this was significant because Jem is still very young, but in the time of the novel, he is already being considered a man. Also, Scout doesn't think the kind of attitude that Calpurnia refers to as "becoming a Mister" is a good kind of attitude, which is seen by how she says she wants it beaten out of him.
