Instruments of the Orchestra

Strings

The orchestra string section includes: two groups of violins, one each of violas, celli, contra basses, and a single harp. Stringed instruments have tightly stretched strings that are plucked or played with a bow.

There are many other string instruments that are not typically used in an orchestra. These include the guitar, ukulele, and mandolin.

The principal violinist is also called the 'concertmaster'. He comes on stage just before the conductor to tune the orchestra.
