The sentence says "Every few moments the moon ripped through them, creating wraithlike shadows that raced along the ground." I had to look at the senetence before this to find out that the moon is shining through the trees, making shadows. I think that wraithlike means ghostly, because I think of ghosts when I see shadows of trees in the moonlight.
