Words to Math

Sometimes a word problem will give you more information than you need.

For example: The area of a playground is 700 square feet. If the dimensions are 35 feet long and 20 feet wide how much fencing in required to enclose the playground?

In order to find the amount of fencing needed, we must first find the perimeter. However, since We are already given the length and width, knowing the area isn't required to solve the problem.

Finding perimeter means adding the lengths and the widths. There are two of each.The important information is the length of 35 feet and a width of 20 feet.

Perimeter of a rectangle is two times the width plus two times the length. So 2 times 35 plus 2 times 20 equals 115. It will require 115 feet of fencing to enclose the playground.
