The Giver, Chapter 2

Today you will read about Jonas and his apprehension over the Cermony of Twelve. Try to notice how the setting affects the story and characters. The story is set sometime in the future and takes place in a society created by people of the future. The goal of the society is to have no more war. People in the society live a stress-free life, where all decisions are made for them.

Try to picture how life in a planned society would be in today's world. Think about how the setting affects the events and characters as you read.

Lois Lowry used allusion when she wrote The Giver. Allusion is when an author refers to another text or piece of media. Usually this is done for symbolic reasons. The character Jonas is named after Jonah. Jonah is found in the Bible, Qu'ran, Torah, and other religious books. In each book he is a prophet, who tells the people what will happen to them.
