A throng of bearded men, in sad-colored garments and gray, steeple-crowned hats, intermixed with women, some wearing hoods, and others bareheaded, was assembled in front of a wooden edifice, the door of which was heavily timbered with oak, and studded with iron spikes.

These people seem to be from a more conservative culture, and I imagine the mass of them to be very stern and serious. ------ 2. Why do you think the door has spikes? The door might have spikes in order to keep others out, or to intimidate people. There is problem something very important behind the door that needs to be guarded.
