Much research is available on what is commonly termed, "communities of practice;" or "virtual communities of practices." These are abbreviated as C O P and V C o P. Merriam-Webster defines community as follows: noun. a group of people who live in the same area: a group of people who have the same interests, religion, race, etc.: a group of nations All three of these definitions are important when discussing communities of practice and professional learning communities.

Some examples of communities are: Members of a church; Parent Teacher Associations; Students at the same school; sports teams; a town, city or state; a book club; neighbors on the same block; or a group of close friends
