The Incas had many animals.

Some of them where:

  • The Cuy: it's also known as guinea-pig and it's a rodent (like a mouse). They ate them. In some countries many children have them as pets.
  • The Llama: it's a cousin of the camel. They used it for carrying heavy things (like a horse or mule) and also because they have very good wool.
  • The hairless Dog: they were pets but they had no hair except for their heads and tails.

The Incas had many animals, but the most important ones where the cuy, the llama and the hairless dog.

Cuzco

Cuzco was the most important city of the Inca Empire. 

It's a city in Peru. Peru is a country in South America.

Cuzco was also known as the "navel of the world". This was because it was in the center of the Empire, just like our navels are in the center (or middle) of our bodies.

Empire

An Empire is like a kingdom, but much bigger. Many kingdoms together could be part of one Empire.

It's when several countries are conquered by one person usually known as the Emperor.

Lets use it a sentence, for example:

"The Roman Empire was very big and ruled many countries".

It's when things are peaceful and working well.

It's the name of the mountain where Manco Capac's scepter sunk.

It's a mountain in Cuzco.

Inca

The Incas where the people who lived hundreds of years ago in Peru.

Their king was known as the Inca. He was the ruler and took care of the Empire.





Legend

A story from very long ago. It is hard to tell if it is true or not, because some parts of it may be real, and other parts may be fantasy.

Lets use it in a sentence, for example:

"The legend of Big Foot is very famous".

Mama Ocllo was the daughter of the Sun.

She helped build the Inca Empire.

Her brother is Manco Capac.

Manco Capac was the son of the Sun.

He built the Inca Empire.

His sister is Mama Ocllo.





scepter

A scepter is a long stick, usually made of metal, and usually it belongs to kings and queens.

It may look like a magic wand and it shows that you are in charge.

Lets use it in a sentence, for example:

"The King's scepter was made of gold and diamonds".

When something sinks, it falls, drops or goes down into the water or the ground.

The Sun God was the most important god of the Incas.

He was also known as Wiracocha.

Titicaca

Lake Titicaca is a very big lake that is between the countries Peru and Bolivia, in South America.

It's on top of the mountains, so it's very high and very cold.

The lake is very big, if you stand on one side you can't see the other side, so it might feel like you're looking at the ocean.
