amendments

The addition to a bill or Constitution.


checks and balances

A system that gives each branch of government specific powers so that each branch can keep the powers of the others from becoming too great.


congress

The legislative body of the United States.  This consists of the Senate and the House of Representatives.


constitution

The plan for the federal government.  It describes the rights that people in the United States have.

A government where the people hold the power.


executive branch

The branch of government whose main job is to make sure that the laws are carried out fairly.


judicial branch

The branch of government whose job is to make sure that laws are carried out fairly.


legislative branch

The branch of government that makes the laws. 


preamble

Introduction to the constitution. It reads "We the people.."


republic

A system of government in which the people choose representatives to make the laws and run the government.


Supreme Court

The head of the judicial branch and and the highest court in the country.
