Declaration of Independence
A document signed in 1776.  It is the document that established the United States of America as an independent nation and officially and legally declared their seperation from Great Britain.

the process of choosing one's government; citizens vote either indirectly or directly on who they want to represent them in government


Enlightenment
a historical period (namely in Europe) where philosohpers suggested changes in all areas of society including government, economy, equal rights, and education

Europe
One of the six continents, located East of the Atlantic Ocean.  Countries include France, Germany, England, Spain, Portugal and parts of Russia.

feminist.
A person concerned with equal rights for all citizens, regardless of sex.  Believes women are capable of doing the same jobs as men and should be afforded the same opportunities.

Founding Fathers
The men who are credited with drafting and signing the Declaration of Independence.

monarchs
A form of government that has a king/queen at the head.  Rule is passed down through generations and is inherited.

philosophers
a group of social scientists who spend their time thinking about society and ways to change/improve it

tyranny
a government in which all power is exerted by an absolute power
