The atom is the basic building block for all matter in the universe. Atoms are extremely small and are made up of a few even smaller particles. The basic particles that make up an atom are electrons, protons, and neutrons. Atoms fit together with other atoms to make up matter.

This is a diagram of the inside of an atom. The blue dots are neutrons, the red ones are protons and the yellow ones are electrons.

You can also see that in the first shell of an atom there are 2 electrons and in the second shell there are 8 electrons.

Listen to this video to learn more about atoms.

Now that you have learned about the basics of atoms we are goint to go a bit deeper into the atomic structure. Listen to Tyler DeWitt explain how atomic structure works.

What are Isotopes?

This video will discuss the basics of Isotopes and how they are created.

We have completed our lesson on atoms and the atomic structure now we will engage in a class activity with our table mates.

Students will identify and describe the parts of atoms using appropriate terminology (proton, neutron, electron, etc.).

I hope that you enjoyed learning about atoms and the atomic structure. Keep learning and stay engaged.
