A volcano is a mountain with an opening that erupts when pressure builds up, causing rock, gases, and ash to erupt.

Volcanoes are mostly found in Hawaii, Alaska, California, Oregon, and Washington. Some volcanoes are on land, and some volcanoes are under water in the ocean.

Magma is underneath Earth's surface. When the magma moves toward the top of the volcano, the volcano erupts and the magma turns into lava.

Lava erupts from the volcano when pressure builds up. When the plates inside Earth's crust shift, it causes the pressure.
