Water Off a Duck's Back

A Fun Book on Idioms

Created by: Lisa Godsil

Idioms are words, phrases, or expressions that are either grammatically unusual, as in, “Long time, no see!”, or their meaning cannot be taken literally, as in, “It's raining cats and dogs!”

When someone says, "It's raining cats and dogs!", they are referring to it raining heavily outside.

When someone says, "That's a piece of cake!", that usually means something is easy.

"You're the apple of my eye!"  What does this mean?

"Cat got your tongue?"  What does this mean?

"When pigs fly!!!"  What does this mean?

Discuss with your shoulder partner what this idiom is and what is its meaning.

Choose one of the following idioms and draw a picture that matches that idiom.

  • Speaking of the Devil!
  • The straw that broke the camel's back.
  • I'm gonna go out on a limb.
  • Hold your horses!
