The Wolf and the Crane

by: Aesop

Adapted by: Megan Boros

Wolf was eating too fast and a bone became stuck in his throat. He could not continue eating because he couldn't get the bone out by himself.

Wolf was still very hungry. And the bone was very painful in his throat. The stuck bone was becoming a serious problem.

Wolf went to Crane for help. She had a long neck, so he knew she would be able to get the bone out.

Wolf told Crane, "I will give you the best reward if you help me."

Crane was unsure about trusting Wolf. He was sneaky and putting her head into his mouth was dangerous. But she was a kind goose, so she helped him.

When the bone was out of Wolf's mouth, he walked away.

Crane called after him, "Hey! What about my reward?"

"You already got it," said Wolf. "I didn't eat you!"

The moral of the story: do not expect rewards when working with evil.
