When I met you!

By: Sarah Rex

Quiet night, wind is blowing,

Winter stars, fire glowing.

Foot pajamas, chilly nose,

Christmas lights, and sparkling snows.

Reading books on grandma's lap,

Waiting patiently for mom and dad.

Gone so long, where did they go?

When are they coming home?

Checking the window, watching the drive,

Wondering when they're going to arrive.

Though my eyes are tired, sleep will not come

Till they're back from their journey, safe at home.

Finally a knock, a burst of cold.

Wind comes in through the open door.

Jump off the couch, dance in place,

Hide behind one of Grandma's legs.

Dad in the doorway, a smile in his eyes,

Mom on his arm, and right beside,

A funny basket, wrapped up tight

In pinks and yellows, safe from the night.

"Come over and see." Mom takes my hand.

I tiptoe closer, leaning in.

A new red face, eyes shut tight.

A cooing cry, the happiest night.

"Hi baby girl," I whisper real sweet

To the tiny pink bundle asleep at my feet.

I'll always remember that moment, that cry.

When I met my sister for the very first time.

The End!
