William Haviland Carrier
1876-1950
Willis Haviland Carrier was born in New York in 1876. He is known as "the king of cool." He was a scientist who studied the temperature and humidity of air. In 1911, he invented air-conditioning.
He determined how temperature and humidity are related. He used his discovery to invent the air conditioner. Then, he started his own company that made and sold air-conditioners.
Air-conditioners keep humidity and temperature balanced. They turn hot air into cold air. The cool and fresh air make people feel comfortable.
Originally, air-conditioners were used in factories to keep machines cool. Then, movie theaters began using them to get people to come see movies during the hot summers.
Today, William Haviland Carrier's invention is used in many different ways. We have air-conditioners in cars, homes, and many other places. They are used to keep people cool which makes them happy.
