Tlingit Traditions

Tlingit People

The Tlingit are a Native American  tribe who live along the southeastern coast of Alaska and the northern coast if British Columbia in Canada.

Tlingit Region

The Tlingit region is rich in natural resources. Many fish and animals good for hunting (deer, rabit, etc) are found in the large forests of this area. They would eat these resources and turn them into goods.

Tlingit Trade

Since there were so many fish and animals, Tlingit people would spend a lot of time making and trading goods  . They would make and trade canoes  , blankets, tools, ornaments, baskets, and seal oil. They would trade with other groups of Native Americans.

Totem Poles

The Tlingit tribe would use large pieces of wood to build large homes. They would carve figures  into the doorwyays of their homes. Families would place large totem poles   outside of their home as well. This tradition   is still followed today by some Tlingit families. Totem poles are used to tell a story and to tell the history of a family. They believed they were represented by animals from the wild.
