My Colorful Snowman

Written by Carol Cyr and Christine DiPerri from the Madeline English School in Everett, Massachusetts
Illustrated by Darcy Schwartz
This book will help children build fluency in reading. Fluency is when you read smoothly and with rhythm. In this book the coaches show you how to use pictures to help children practice their fluency.

The eyes are blue.

The nose is orange.
Encourage your child to repeat the sentences after you as you read. Echoing your reading helps them understand what fluent readers sound like.

The mouth is red.
The pictures give clues that help your child read. Point to the pictures to help your child guess what the words say.

The arms are brown.
Notice how the sentence structure repeats over and over. This will make it easier for your child to predict what the words are.

The hat is black.
After reading the book through a few times, children can help you complete the sentences! Don't read the last word of the sentence. Wait for your child to fill it in!

The scarf is green.

The buttons are purple.

The boots are yellow.
Children love to hear stories over and over again. It helps them remember the words and be able to tell the story on their own.

The snowballs are white.

A snowman!

The End!
Ask your child to read to you. Pretend you don't understand the story, and ask them to help you read it. Let them be the experts!
