When volcanoes erupts, it's like opening a can of shaken soda! Bubbles of gas force the liquid out, called lava .

Once the lava cools and hardens it becomes rock, which is brand new crust ! Lava that cools into volcanic crust can even build up to create mountains or islands.

Magma collects in large pockets called magma chambers inside the volcano. Eruptions happen by that magma moving up a tunnel to get to the bowl-shaped crater at the top. Sometimes, magma can end up in a side vent and errupt from the side of the volcano!
