The Water Cycle

Have you ever wondered where rain, snow, sleet, or hail come from?

What do you want to know about the water cycle?

Words to Know

Evaporation (e-vap-or-a-tion)

Condensation (con-den-sa-tion)

Precipitation (pre-cip-i-ta-tion)

The job of the water cycle is to take the water on the Earth and move it all around the world.

The water cycle starts with evaporation.  Evaporation happens when the heat from the sun warms up the ground water and turns the liquid water into a gas.

During evaporation, the ground water turns it into water vapor.

Condensation then takes over. With condensation, the water vapor goes up to the clouds and cools down.

After the water vapor cools down, it changes back into a liquid.

Precipitation happens when the clouds fill up with more water than what they can hold and...

...it falls from the clouds in the form of rain, snow, small pieces of ice called sleet, or big pieces of ice called hail.

After precipation, the water cycle starts over again with evaporation.

This is the water cycle, and it happens all the time.
