Types of Owls

There are over 155 kinds of owls.  However, there are only two different types of owls.  Owls with round faces are Strigidae owls.  Owls with heart-shaped faces are Tytonidae owls.

Owls of North America

There are about 21 different kinds of owls living in North America.  The smallest owl is the elf owl, and the largest owl is the great gray owl.  Other kinds of owls are the spotted owl, barn owl, snowy owl, and the great horned owl.

Features of Owls

Owls have very large eyes that can see far.  The eyes of an owl cannot move like your eyes can.  In order to see all around them, owls have a very flexible neck that can turn almost completely around.  Their necks can turn upside down.

Owl Feathers

When owls are born, their feathers start out soft and fluffy.  As an owl gets older, the feathers become thicker and cover the whole body.

Owls have special feathers that have very soft edges.  The soft edges allow for the owl to fly quietly.

Whooo Hoots?

If you listen at night, you might just hear an owl hoot!  However, not all owls hoot.  Some owls screech or hiss.  Other owls whistle, scream, or bark to communicate with one another.

Habitats of the Birds

Owls live in many different types of habitats. They have been found in hot and cold places.  Some owls live in areas with many trees or in the mountains.  Other types of owls live near the ocean or in rainforests.  Owls find places to live in trees, tree stumps, on the ground, or in bird nests.

Hunters of the Night

Owls use their quiet wings, large eyes, and good hearing to hunt their prey or their food.

Owls are raptors.  Raptors are birds of prey, which means they eat meat.  They grasp their prey with their sharp talons.  Owls are known to pounce or sneak up on their prey silently during the night.

Camouflage

The colors of an owl’s feathers help it camouflage into the land and trees around it.  Camouflage means to look like the things around you.  Camouflaging helps owls hide from their prey and keep them safe.

The brown feathers help camouflage the owl into the brown dirt.

Diet

Different owls have different types of diets. Many owls eat snakes, insects, fish, rabbits, mice, and other small animals.

Owls do not have teeth, so they cannot chew their food.  They tear their food with their sharp beaks or swallow their food whole.

Life Cycle of an Owl

Owls start their life by coming out of an egg.  From an egg, a baby owl or owlet is born.  A mother owl protects her babies in a nest.  As the owlets grow older, they become stronger from getting food from both parents.  When owlets are about two months old, they are able to start flying.  Once the young owls are about five months old, they are able to live on their own.
