Kayla Goes To The Post Office

By Brennan Colby

It was a beautiful day in Selinsgrove and Kayla woke up with a big plan for the day.  She wanted to send a letter and a package to her grandparents. Kayla asked her parents if she could do just that and they said that they could.

More than anything, Kayla wanted to show her grandparents how well she could make chocolate cookies.  So, the very next thing that she did was bake a few dozen cookies to send to them.  Then she packaged them up and prepared to walk to the Post Office.

Of course Kayla could not just send cookies to her family without letting them know what it was for.  Therefor, she started writing a letter to them.  She started off asking how they were and went to talking about how she was doing.  Finishing off the letter, Kayla told them how excited she was to hear how much they liked her cookies.

It was time for Kayla to go to the Post Office to mail her items.  She grabbed her coat and followed her parents out the door.  Making sure to stay on the sidewalk and to look both ways before crossing the street, she was there in no time.

Walking into the US Postal Service building Kayla saw lots of PO Boxes and a window where people were standing in a line.  She went over to the line and waiter her turn before she could ask her quesitons.  Eventually, becuase she waited patiently, Kayla got to the front of the line and asked for help packing her cookie into a package.  The man at the desk helped her happily and asked if she needed anything else.

Kayla next had to figure out how to mail both her letter and her already packaged package.  She asked the man in the window and he said that she needed to address both of them.  WIth his help Kayla was able to correctly address her mail.  The man was asking her questions about where they were going and where the return address is.  At one point Kayla was having trouble writing it down so he helped her.

Once Kayla had finished addressing her mail, she knew that she needed to buy and place some stamps.  The man told her that there was a few different kinds of stamps and a few different styles.  Kayla eventually was able to select a stamp and she paid for the proper amount that she needed. With the mans help, Kayla placed the correct number of stamps on each piece of mail.

Happy with herself for mailing her own mail, Kayla left the Post Office and went home.  She felt very accomplished for the day and Kayla knew that this skill of mailing and using the Post Office is something that she is going to use for the rest of her life.  Not only that, but she could not wait to hear back from her grandparents!

Kayla was also able to get a piece of candy after mailing her package and letter.
