The Wonderful Life of Jacques Cousteau



EARLY LIFE

Jacques Cousteau was born in 1910.  At age 4, he began to swim.  At age 23, Jacques was given googles and began to swim in the Mediterranean Ocean.  It was then that Jacques discovered the magical underwater world of the ocean.




Inventions

In the 1940s, Jacques made two new inventions .  He built a machine to be able to stay underwater for a long time, and he built a camera that could take pictures underwater.


Calypso

Jacques bought an old boat and turned it into his ship, which he called Calypso.  Jacques used this ship to travel the world and explore the ocean.  He filmed many of his adventures for television.




Later Life

Jacques Cousteau loved the sea.  Jacques realized that humans were doing a lot of harm to the ocean.   Starting in the 1970s, Jacques began to tell this to the world.  His television shows started to talk about saving the oceans.
