This is the story of a boy named Max. His mother sends him to bed without dinner and he falls asleep. As he is sleeping his room transforms into a forest with an ocean. He wakes up and there is a boat waiting for him and he gets on.

When he gets off the boat he finds himself with the wild things. He says the wild things are ferocious and bigger than him, he looks at them without fear and they realize he is wild too. They decide to make Max king and he says, "let the wild rumpus start!" The wild things act wild and he sends them to bed without dinner.

After that he realizes that taking care of all of the wild things is a lot of work. He makes the decision to get back on the boat and sail back home. He sails back home to see his dinner waiting for him in his room.
