Tlingit Traditions

The Tlingit Tribe's Location

The Tlingit (KLINHNG-it) are Native Americans who live along the southeastern coast of Alaska and the northern coast of British Columbia in Canada.

This Tlingit cultural region is rich in natural resources such as: vast forests, fish, and game.

They used these resources for hundreds of years by fishing (for salmon), hunting (for dear and seals), and building their homes with the plentiful forest wood.

Tlingit families often placed totem poles outside their homes.

They also carved canoes for fishing, hunting, and trading with other Native Americans. Other items they crafted and traded include: blankets, copper tools, ornaments, baskets, and seal oil.
