The Icelandic Huldufolk and their Flight on Christmas Eve Night
By Katie Fox
On Christmas Eve, when the night is still, the elven Huldufolk come out to play.
They look for trees, and barns, and fields, hoping someone left the barn clean for their Christmas Eve party.
They look for food to guide the way, looking and looking and day after day.
Finally! They look, and they see a barn, all cozy and nestled on a small little farm.
The scent of the cookies guide their way, at least the huludfolk have found a place to stay.
They fly, and they look, sure to stay unseen, for if they were found, then they’d have to leave!
A little girl looks from inside, sensing the huldufolk, flying on by!
They sprinkle their pixie dust, and fly even faster, heading to the barn going faster and faster.
Finally, they make it- they’re safe out of sight, and their party is ready to head to new heights.
They spread out the lights, and put ribbon on the stairs, and the lady huldufolk start braiding their hair.
The time has come! The huldufolk are swarming, ready for a Christmas eve party that’ll have their hearts a warming.
They music plays on, and no one is still until the huldufolk see a little face looking in from the sill.
They fly and they scurry, and hope that next Christmas Eve, they won’t leave with a hurry.
Little ones stay inside, and soon you might find, a little group of huldufolk stopping on by, looking for a place where they can free fly, and celebrate Christmas in the blink of an eye!
