A busy coral reef

Did you know 70% of our planet

is covered by oceans?

This means humans only live in 30% of our whole planet!

The ocean is a mystery to scientists.  There is still so much about it that we need to discover.  Scientists know more about outer space than what’s going on underneath the deep blue seas.

There are 4 major Oceans: The largest ocean on Earth is the Pacific Ocean. This covers 30% of our whole planet’s surface.  This ocean also has an about 25,000 islands.

The Atlantic Ocean is the 2nd largest ocean.  It covers 21% of the Earth’s surface.

The 3rd largest ocean is the Indian Ocean. It covers around 14% of the planet.  This ocean is the warmest.

The smallest ocean is the Arctic Ocean. During winter, this ocean almost completely covered in ice!

There are many different species of animals in the ocean.

There are fish, mammals, sharks, mollusks.

Fish are vertebrate animals that live in the water. Vertebrate means they have a spinal cord surrounded by bone or cartilage.

Fish have an organ called gills that take in oxygen from the water around them.

There are over 30,000 known species of fish.

A tuna is the fastest fish in the ocean.  Tuna can swim 43 mph.

Fish are covered in scales which are often covered in a layer of slime to help their movement through water.

Cleaner fish help out other fish by removing parasites and dead skin from their scales.

Over 1000 fish species are threatened by extinction.

Whales, dolphins, porpoises, walruses, manatees, dugongs, seals, and sea otters are all mammals that live in the ocean.

These animals have lungs, live babies, and nurse their young.

Marine mammals also have some fur or hair, but sometimes it falls out by they time they become adults.

Sharks are the oldest predator, they have been alive for 450 million years!

Whale sharks are the largest sean animal in the ocean.  They can be  anywhere from 33 to 40 feet.  This is as long as a school bus! The longest Whale Shark to date was recorded at 60 feet. The average weight being around 15 to 20 tons – that’s over 30,000 pounds!

The word, “mollusk” means soft, and mollusks are just that!

They don’t have skeletons or bones. Some have shells made of calcium.

Clams, mussels, octopus and squids are popular mollusks.

None of these animals have bones! These animals have interesting ways to protect themselves because they do not have bones.

For instance a squid uses ink to blind their predator if they are being hunted!

We have only explored about 5% of the world’s oceans! Maybe you will become a scientist one day that studies all about the ocean and all it's crazy parts!

There’s a lot more to be discovered!
