Why do I need Math ???

Do you know why numbers are so important in daily life? Knowing basic math skills as well as algebra and geometry can help you be successful in anything you do.

Students often ask, where in real life you would need math skills? In middle school, students may wonder, why even study square roots or integers?

The answer is, math is important in many ways, from buying a fish tank, to following a favorite recipe.

Suppose you want to buy a fish tank that is 3 feet long, 18 inches high and 1 foot wide. What will the Volume be in cubic inches?  in Gallons?

length = 3 feet = 36 inches

width = 1 foot = 12 inches

height = 1.5 feet = 18 inches

volume = 36 inches x 12 inches x 18 inches = 7776 cubic inches

gallons = 7776 cubic inches / 231 cubic inches = 33.66 gallons

Now that we know how many gallons of water our new aquarium will hold,try to figure out the weight of a filled aquarium if an empty aquarium weights 38 lbs.

When making videos in class, we know that it takes 2 Gigabytes of storage to hold 10 minutes of video.  We want to calculate how much storage we will need to hold an hour and a half video.

I know that you can do this problem using ratio and proportion.  Just think about it and use our buddies to help you if you get stuck.
