As the moon orbits or circles the Earth, the phase changes. Lets start with what is called the New Moon phase. This is where we can't see any of the lit up side of the moon. The moon is between us and the sun.

When the moon is at its first quarter, the right half is lit up. This phase is between the waxing crescent and waxing gibbous.

A Full Moon is when the moon is bright white due to the Sun's rays are shining directly on its surface.

During the third Quarter, the moon is bright on the left side. This is the opposite of the First Quarter.
