Welcome to Maycomb:

The Setting of Harper Lee's

To Kill a Mockingbird

*******

The novel takes place in southern Alabama,in the fictional town of Maycomb. This town is based upon the real town Harper Lee grew up in, Monroeville.

The novel takes place in 1935, during the Great Depression. This was a time of extreme poverty all around the world.

It was also a time of segregation of white and African-Americans.

It was based upon a system of separation and unequal rights, especially in southern states.

Many African-American families were sharecroppers working for white landowners. Tom Robinson and his family worked as sharecroppers.

The homes of Maycomb likely resembled the homes that follow.

This is the interior of the Monroeville courthouse which that of Maycomb is based upon.

I hope that this UDL book has increased your enjoyment and understanding of To Kill a Mockingbird.
