Tony's Town

By Ryan Schultz

Tony is a 10 year old boy who lives in a small town called Harpersville. Tony moved to Harpersville when he was 7 and likes his town very much. Every day in the spring Tony wakes up bright and early hoping to find some new friends to play with. Tony loves playing outside and really enjoys doing all different kinds of sports.

Tony really likes his town because there are all kinds of fun things to do, especially in the spring time. Tony loves going to the fair and carnival with his parents, and really enjoys playing at the park. Tony thinks that his park is the best in the whole world because he can play basketball, skateboard, play baseball or hang out on the swings.

Even though Tony enjoys playing games, and going to carnivals, he has no friends. See Tony is very shy, whenever he sees other kids he wants to talk to them but hes so worried about them not liking him, or making fun of him. Every day in the spring Tony goes to the park, and every day he plays by himself, afraid to talk to the other boys and girls.

Finally one day Tony's mom realized that Tony played by himself a lot and asked him why he didn't make any new friends. Tony told his mom that he was too scared about what the other kids thought of him. Tony's mom could tell that Tony was a shy kid, so she told him that making new friends is like overcoming a fear; sometimes you just have to put yourself out there and not care what other people think. So Tony thought real hard about his mom's advice and decided to do something about it.

The following day, Tony decided to take his mom's advice. He woke up that morning determined to make a change; but when he got to the park, his fears overcame him again. Tony sat on the swings watching the other kids play hoops on the court, but Tony was too scared to ask if he could join them. Finally, Tony decided he was going to leave and go back home, but as he walked past the court one of the kids said, "hey buddy, you wanna play?" That was just enough for Tony to walk over there and play with them and from then on out Tony tried to make friends as often as he could, because he finally knew what it was like to have them
