What is Metamorphosis?

Metamorphosis  is the process of an animal transforming  into an adult.  In a butterfly's life cycle, we are able to see metamorphosis.  Metamorphosis happens in the life a frog, an ant, and a spider.

What is an Egg?

The life cycle of a butterfly starts with an egg .  An egg is the small, round shell that the butterfly rests in before it hatches.

What is a Caterpillar?

When the egg hatches, the butterfly comes out in the form of a caterpillar.  A caterpillar is a baby butterfly with no wings and many legs.  A caterpillar is also known as the larva  . It eats and eats all day to get healthy and strong.

What is a Chrysalis?

After the caterpillar has eaten enough, it builds a chrysalis .  A chrysalis is a hard outer layer to protect the caterpillar's body.  The caterpillar is changing really fast inside of a chrysalis.  The chrysalis is also known as the pupa .

The Butterfly

Finally, a beautiful butterfly will emerge from the chrysalis.  Now, metamorphosis is over.  The butterfly is now an adult.
