Wonderful Women

Alexis Maroney

Are you ready to meet a whole bunch of amazing women from throughout history? They're ready to meet you! Keep going and be ready to learn about some pretty awesome people!

This is Amelia Earhart!

She was the first female aviator (that's a fancy word for pilot) to fly by herself across the Atlantic Ocean!

When she became a pilot, women were not allowed to fly planes, but that didn't stop her!

Say hello to Linda Brown! She was just 8 years old when she was a part of a Supreme Court  case that made segregation in public schools unconstitutional .

That basically means that African American children were legally required to get the same education as White students, and were allowed to go to school with White children. Before this, African American students and White students went to different schools!

Remember that Supreme Court we just talked about? The Supreme Court is made up of 9 Supreme Court Justices  who make the decisions.

This is Sandra Day O'Connor the first woman Supreme Court Justice ever!

You may recognize Rosa Parks.

She is a well-known Civil Rights Activist. She most famously refused to sit in the back of the bus, like African American people were forced to do. That is until she stood up for what she believed!

Standing behind her in the picture is Martin Luther King Jr. they were friends!

Women can be famous scientists too! Marie Curie was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize (the biggest prize you can get in Science).

She was also the only person to win the prize twice!

You've met Amelia Earhart, now this is Sally Ride.

She was the first American woman to go to Space! She was also the youngest astronaut in history to go to Space.

She was just 32 years old!

The United States Secretary of State is a really important position that is picked by the President. The first Secretary of State was Thomas Jefferson in 1790.

Introducing Madeleine Albright, she became the first female Secretary of State in 1997 under President Clinton.

Now here is a real-life super hero!

Harriet Tubman was a slave who made her way to freedom, and then went back and guided about 300 more slaves to freedom. She also led a mission that liberated another 700 slaves!

Once she had her freedom Harriet was an American abolitionist and political activist

Eleanor Roosevelt was the First Lady of the United States during President Franklin D. Roosevelt's leadership.

He was president for 12 years (this was before presidents could only serve for 8 years). This made Eleanor the longest service First Lady and was very well known for her human rights achievements.

She helped make a lot of decisions with President Roosevelt especially when he started getting sick.

Last, but certainly not least in our cast of Wonderful Women in History is Disney animator Retta Scott.

She was the first female animator, and is most famous for the work she did on the movie Bambi!

Thanks for taking the time to meet all of these amazing ladies from history!

That's 10 new friends you can talk about!

See you next time!
