The States of Matter

The 3 States of Matter

All things are made of matter .

Things can be either solids, liquids or gases.

Solids

Solids are made of matter that have a specific volume .

Solids are made of particles that are tightly packed. These particles vibrate in place.

The shape of a solid does not change.

Liquids

Liquids are made of particles  that slide past each other. This allows liquids to change their shape.

Liquids do not have a specific shape. They will always take the shape of the container they are in.

Liquids have a specific volume . No matter what the size of the container is, the liquid will always have the same volume .

Gases

Gas is matter that is invisible. The particles in a gas are very spread out and barely touch each other.

Gases do not have a specific shape or volume.

Gases take on the volume of the container they are in. If the volume of the container changes, then the volume of the gas changes, too.
