The Slump

by

Adapted from Kellen Brucia's "Baseball Stories"

You walk up to the plate, ready to go

Ready to get a hit and break the slump

The season long slump you've been fighting

You wait and take the first pitch,

You wait and take the first pitch,

The umpire calls "strike"

Then you take another,

He calls "strike two,"

Now it's go time

As you choke up and focus on hitting the ball,

You swing, fast and hard

A perfect hit,

Right over the second baseman's head

But then you see something strange,

He runs back,

And leaps so high you can't even see him anymore

And as you watch your slump-breaking hit fall into his glove,

You walk back to the dugout,

Sad and determined
