The History of Hip Hop Soul

by Rashad A. Schinnery

I dedicate this book to all the

R & B fans out there who like hip hop. Hip Hop Soul is one of the most popular sounds on the music scene today. This relates to my life because I'm also an R&B fan who also likes hip hop so much that when I first heard hip hop soul, I decided to try it out myself.

Some artists that do this music are Jagged Edge, 112, Keyshia Cole, B2K, Jon B, Brandy, Destiny’s Child, Ray J, TLC, SWV, Deborah Cox, Monica, IMx, Marques Houston, Usher and R. Kelly. This relates to my life because when I was little, I've seen these artists' inteviews and  hip hop soul performances on BET's 106 & Park.

The dream I‘ve dreamt about since I was younger was to become an artist. Not just any artist, a hip hop soul artist. This relates to my life because when I kept listening to Usher's 2002 single, "U Don't Have To Call', I felt I would be able to sing like that and have hit singles myself.

Hip Hop Soul is the second major subgenre of contemporary R&B. Basically, what it means is your taking something that a rapper rapped over, and your taking your soulful voice and putting over that hip hop track.

This is similar to the Jimmy Santiago Baca situation because when he was in prison, he wrote poetry to make him self feel free.

The first time I heard hip hop soul was listening to Method Man’s 1995 single “You’re All I Need To Get By” featuring  Mary J. Blige. It relates to my life because I remember listening to Mary J. Blige's 1997 single, "Love Is All We Need" feat. Nas and thought that song was off the hook.

When I first heard that song, I was thinking to myself, “This record's hot like fire! I should be doing hip hop soul myself.” I like the song so much because of the video. In the video, it's talking all about how to be there for your loved ones, how to care for them, how to love them, and how to be down with them in good and bad times. This relates to my life because whenever I don't have nothing else to do, I listen to hip hop soul to make me feel like I do have something to do.

Other artists that do this music are Faith Evans, Mary J. Blige, Aaliyah, Tyrese, Ginuwine, Donell Jones and Montell Jordan. This also relates to my life because whenever I listen to these artists, they make wanna get up and jam all night long.

Whenever I listen to hip hop soul, it makes me wanna move and it makes me wanna have fun. This relates to my life because when I first heard Tyrese's 2001 hit, "Just a Baby Boy" from the movie Baby Boy, I was saying to myself, "Uh-oh, I'm liking this record! This is the jam!

Whenever you come home from a hard day's work, Hip Hop Soul is the music to listen to because it helps you rest yourself. It relates to my life because I remember coming home from school feeling hot and sweaty all day. When I felt like that, I would go straight to my room, turn my air on and put in Method Man's single, "You're All I Need To Get By", and I felt just fine.
