INTRODUCTION

Imagine you're outside on a bright summer day.  You tilt your face up toward the sky and feel heat on your face.  The brightness, the heat, what is causing those things?  You're right!  The sun!

WHAT IS IT?

So what exactly is the sun?  Have you ever seen the stars out at night?  Well, the sun is a star !  It's the star that is the closest to us here on Earth.  That's why it seems so big!  The other stars we see at night are much, much, MUCH further away, that's why they look so small.  The sun is very important to us here on Earth and to our entire solar system .

THE SOLAR SYSTEM

(Can you name the planets below?)

That leads us to another important question.  What is the solar system?  The solar system is like the space neighborhood that we live in.  The sun is at the center of our solar system, holding it all together!  All the planets orbit  around the sun and stay in their own places because of gravity  and our sun.

HEAT AND LIGHT

The sun is what gives our planet heat and light.  Heat is very important to all living things on Earth.  Without it, the water would turn to ice, the air would be too cold for us and we would not have the energy to grow the plants we need for food.  Not to mention, there would be no daylight!  Can you imagine having nighttime, ALL THE TIME?

DAY AND NIGHT

The changing of day to night is due to a couple of important things.  One, our planet rotates, meaning it turns or spins, all the time.  Two, you guessed it, THE SUN!  The part of the planet that is FACING the sun is daytime.  The part of Earth that is AWAY from the sun is experiencing night.

SEASONS

The sun is the reason we have seasons too.  Can you believe it?  Well, the sun and the fact that the Earth is tilted  on it's axis .  Meaning the earth is not straight up and down.  It's slanted a bit.  Because of this, the top and bottom half of the Earth experience seasons at different times.  Can you name the four seasons?  If you said spring, summer, fall and winter, you're right!

CONCLUSION

As you can see, the sun is incredibly important and what a cool, amazing thing in our sky!  Our closest star, effecting our days and nights, our seasons and helping life grow every day.  We wouldn't be here without the sun.
