Hawa and Jalika's Trig Walk

by : Franchetta Pepito

It was a perfect summer day. The sun was out but the winds  tempered the heat. So , best friends Hawa and Jalika decided to walk around their neighborhood.

The two friends first visited the town's tallest and oldest tree which was right in the center of the town's square. After walking 15 feet away, Hawa looked up to the top of the tree at an angle of elevation of 57°.  Jalika was wondering how she can compute for the tree's height without considering Hawa's height.

By this time, the Hawa and Jalika have reached a hill that is  inclined 24°. They had to walk 32 feet to reach the top of the hill. How high was the hill?

On their way home, they saw a fireman trying to rescue a cat which had climbed halfway up the town's tallest tree. A ladder was used to get the cat and it formed an angle of 47° with the ground. How long was the ladder used?

Everyone is happy that the cat was helped down and returned to its owner. Jalika and Hawa then headed for their respective homes.
