Judy Baca is one of our most important Public Artists of our time. Judy was born on September 20,1946 in East Los Angeles, California. She was raised in an all female home. Her parents were Mexican American.
Her grandmother was a herbal healer. Judy was influenced by her grandmother.
Later, Judy earned Bachelor's and Master's degrees in art from California State University, Nothridge (CSUN). She also began a professorship at University of California, Irvine in 1980 when she was 34.
Judy Baca was an American Artist, activist, and University of California, Los Angeles professor of fine arts. She was there at the 1970 Chicano Moratorium , an anti-war action of the Chicano Movement .
In 1977 , she took a workshop at the Taller Siqueiros in Cuernavaca , Mexico to learn muralism techniques.
In 1988, the Mayor of Los Angleos, Tom Bradley commissioned her to create the Neighborhood Pride Program, a city wide project to paint murals. The project had over 80 murals.
Judy Baca co-founded UCLA's Ceasar Chavez Center for Interdisciplinary Studies, and she served Vice Chair.
In June 2008 she spoke at the Against the Wall: The ruin and the renewal of LA's murals. It was at Morano Kiang Gallery across the street from the Pope of Broadway Murals.
Judy Baca was the founder and executive director of the Venice, California-based Social and Public Art Resource Center (SPARC) . It was a community Arts Center and is best known of the mural project that created one of the largest murals, the Great Wall of Los Angelos.
In 1976 she founded SPARC. She dedicated a traveling mural called the Word Wall : A vision of the future without fear to world peace.
As you can see Judy Baca accomplished alot in her life. She's still alive today, she's 63 years old.
I admire Judy Baca because she was one of the most important Public Artists of our time. She had alot of major acomplishments.
Also Judy created the Great Wall of Los Angeles which is now the world's longest mural . It is 2,700 feet. The Great Wall shows the multi-cultural history of California from pre- history 1950s. She started it in 1976.
