The Tree Outside Our Window

Written and illustrated by Patricia Owens Mayberger

The tree outside our window is massive.

It is an oak tree, and it is very old. It was a sapling  when the school was built.

The tree outside our window welcomes us with deep, green leaves when school opens in September.

In October, it's leaves turn red and yellow, and tumble  to the ground.

The tree outside our window grows acorns . Acorns are oak tree seeds. In autumn, they fall to the ground and crunch under our feet.

Squirrels forage for acorns. They bury them in the ground in autumn, and dig them up in the spring to eat.

The tree outside our window is dormant when all the leaves fall off. It rests over the winter months.

All is still as the cold winter days pass...

The tree outside our window awakens in February as the days lengthen . Spring is coming!

One windy day in March, we look out our window and our tree is covered in buds .

Spring is here!

The tree outside our window sprouts  tiny green flowers. Tender  little yellow-green leaves unfurl , and soon grow into sturdy  green leaves.

School is almost over. It is time for us to step up to first grade!

The tree outside our window is covered in glossy  green leaves. We can hear baby birds in the branches.

Soon they will fly away, too!

The tree outside our window will be there when the new young ones arrive.
