Kristy, Kyle, and Ryan live in a big house with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Chipper.

One day, Kristy asked her parents if she could get a puppy.  Kristy explained  that both of her brothers had pets.  “Kyle got a hamster when he was ten and Ryan got a fish when he was five.  I am eight and I still don’t have a pet.  It’s not fair !”

Kristy’s parents thought about what she said.  Kristy was right.  It wasn’t fair .  So, Mr. and Mrs. Chipper made a deal  with Kristy.  Since a puppy needs to be cared for, Kristy would need to prove  that she was responsible  enough to have a puppy.

For one month, Kristy would have to keep her bedroom clean, take out the garbage, and do her homework before playing or watching television.

At first, Kristy thought this was unfair .  She wanted a puppy so badly though and decided she would do anything to get one.  So, for one month, Kristy kept her room clean, took out the garbage, and did her homework right after school.

Mr. and Mrs. Chipper were impressed  with the job Kristy was doing and decided that she was ready to have a puppy.  Kristy’s birthday was in one week and a puppy would be the perfect gift.

Kyle, Ryan, and Mr. and Mrs. Chipper all stood around the table singing, “Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday Dear Kristy, Happy Birthday to you.”  Then Kristy closed her eyes, made a wish, and blew the candles out.  Just as Kristy opened her eyes, Mr. Chipper handed her a box.

Kristy looked inside the box and shouted, “A puppy!”  She was so excited and said "Thank you" to her parents.  Kristy decided a perfect name for her puppy would be "Surprise."

From that day on, Kristy took care of Surprise and shared all of her love with him.
