George Washington

President George Washington is the president on the 1dollar bill.  He was the 1st president.

Born: 1732

Died: 1799

 George Washington was the first president of the United States of America.  He was a great president and set the country up to prosper .  He is known for his Farewell Address.  In his address he warned the country not to develop political parties, stay neutral , call every president Mr. President, and that a person should only serve two consecutive terms as president.

 

Fun Fact:  George Washington had all of his teeth pulled at age 57.



Abraham Lincoln

Abraham Lincoln was the 16th president.  He is on 5 dollar the bill.

Born: 1809

Died:1865

Abraham Lincoln was the president during the American Civil War.  The Civil War was fought between the northern states and the southern states over slavery.  The North did not want the United States to have slaves because it was an unfair and cruel practice.  The South wanted slaves because slaves did all of the labor on the plantations .  In Abraham Lincoln's "Getttysburg Address" he freed all of the slaves in the southern states.  He was assassinated in 1865 by John Wilkes Booth.

 

Fun Fact:  Lincoln was 6 feet 4 inches tall.  He was the tallest president.



Alexander Hamilton

Alexander Hamilton is on the 10 dollar bill.  He was the 1st United States Secretary of the Treasury .  He was never a president.

Born: 1755 or 1757 (there is not an exact record)

Died: 1804

Alexander Hamilton was one of the Founding Fathers of the United States.  He believed that the government should be very strong and he set up a national bank. Some people did not like the national bank because it would give the national government too much power.  Even though some people did not like his ideas, he helped make the United States a prosperous nation.  In 1804 he was killed by Aaron Burr during a duel.

 

Fun Fact:  Alexander Hamilton once gave a 6 hour speech!  Could you image talking for that long?



Andrew Jackson

Andrew Jackson was the 7th president.  He is on the 20 dollar bill.

Born: 1767

Died: 1845

Andrew Jackson was a fierce leader.  He was a general in the army and defeated the British during the War of 1812 in New Orleans.  When he became the President he did everything he could to make the life of Americans better.  He paid off all of the money the United States owed to other nations, he kept the United States together when South Carolina wanted to secede from the United States, and he was a good role model.  Andrew Jackson did not go to school, but he was able to become a successful general in the army, a successful Congressman, and a successful President because he worked hard.

Fun fact: He lived with a bullet in his chest that was never taken out after he was shot in a duel .

 



Ulysses S. Grant

Ulysses S. Grant is on the bill.  He was the 18th president.

Born: 1822

Died: 1885

Ulyssess S. Grant was a brave soldier who fought fiercely during the Mexican-American War.  Later Grant was a great general during the Civil War.  He helped force the South to surrender .  He was not the best president, but he fought for human rights.  Grant passed the 15th Amendment which allowed African Americans to vote.  He also fought to make life better for Native Americans.  Although he did a lot of good, there was a money crisis while he was president and many people struggled because they did not have a lot of money.

 

Fun Fact: He got a speeding ticket for riding his horse too fast.
